Talking with Dr Tolonen Dr Matti Tolonen, specialist in Nutritional Medicine, explains how the novel fish oil called E-EPA may benefit your physical and mental health Fish oil offers you a high concentration of polyunsaturated fats called omega-3- fatty acids. You will be hearing lots about these healthy fats in the general media because they are so important to your health. While all fish contains these fats, cold-water fish like salmon, sea bass, tuna, trout, mackerel, sardines, are particularly rich sources because their diet is based on plankton which itself is packed with omega-3´s. Cold-water fish also boasts the most potent forms of omega-3´s: the essential fatty acids known as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA). E-EPA stands for ethyl-EPA, i.e., ethyl ester of EPA and this is a highly purified form of this Omega 3. Omega-3´s have a myriad of healing powers – our body turns them into anti-inflammatory hormone-like substances (so-called eicosanoids and resolvins) which exert many beneficial effects in the body. For instance the skin, hair, nails, heart, arteries, peripheral nerves and especially the brain all benefit from Omega-3 in the diet. Omega 3 lowers triglycerides which can benefit your heart, and on a basic, cellular level they may also improve the body´s use of its own insulin, improving the sensitivity of insulin in receptors. This may be particularly useful for those with insulin resistance and diabetes. E-EPA is biologically superior to the traditional fish oils and some newer omega-3 products. E-EPA is manufactured from fish oil using a sophisticated process called vacuum distillation in which one fatty acid (e.g., EPA) can be highly concentrated, while other less important and harmfull fatty acis and all environmental toxins can be removed from the oil. This means that can have all the benefits of EPA without any harmful substances like mercury. The product´s colour is pale and its odour and taste are mild. In addition, the oil does not get rancid, as it does not contain the autooxidative Omega-3-fatty acid DHA. The molecule of E-EPA is smaller than the EPA in fish and standard Omega 3 capsules and therefore it passes the blood-brain-barrier more easily. It is therefore biologically more efficient for mental health than regular fish oils. Biologically oriented psychiatrists prefer E-EPA to other Omega 3 products, as can be seen from the studies referred to on this site. The raw materal for Dr Tolonen’s E-EPA is totally natural, extracted from pure sardines in the Pacific Ocean. E-EPA is free from cholesterol, triglycerides, trans fatty acids and environmental pollutants, such as mercury, lead, PCB and dioxin, unlike most other fish oil products on the market. Each capsule of Dr Tolonen´s E-EPA contains 70 % (500 mg), highly purified E-EPA plus vitamin E as antioxidant and 5 µg vitamin D. Conventional omega-3´s contain only 15 to 35 % EPA.
