It is well known that the omega 3 oils found in fish, expecially oily fish from cold waters, have many healthy benefits. The active ingredient in fish oils is EPA The abbreviation EPA stands for eicosapentaenoic acid, which exerts many beneficial health effects in the body. It can:
- Help reduce inflammation in joints and ulcerative colitis
- Decrease the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease
- Help to control our cholesterol
- Help people with depression and anxiety disorders
- Help infants brains and to develop and function properly
- Helps to heal dry skin
So how can fish oil be bad for pregnant women?
Fish is naturally high in protein, low in bad fats, and a great source of omega 3 oils, so it sounds hard to believe that fish could be bad for us. Especially since the American Heart Association suggests we eat lots of fish. Read More
Novel fish oil for patients after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage
A group of Japanese neurosurgeons have tested supplementation with E-EPA (1.800mg/day) and shown it to be beneficial for patients operated after a subarachoid hemorrage. Read More
How to choose a good quality fish oil
When shopping for Omega 3 fatty acids it is easy to be mistaken by labels indicating that each capsule contains 1000mg of fish oil. This does no t mean you are getting 1000mg of Omega 3 fattay acids. Low price fish oils with low levels of EPA is false economy.
For therapeutic values, particulary for depression, you need an intake of around 1000mg of pure EPA per day.
Normal omega 3 supplements only contain around 15-18% EPA where has the E-EPA from Dr Tolonen’s contains 70% EPA.
The abbreviation EPA stands for eicosapentaenoic acid which exert many beneficial health effects in the body. E-EPA is not to be confused with untreated EPA. The main difference therefore between E-EPA oil and normal EPA oils is that the former is absorbed better and has been thoroughly ‘cleaned’ of all pollutants and triglycerides. The E in front of the EPA stands for Ethyl’ which is a chemical group added to the EPA molecule during the vacuum distillation.
One trick many suppliers use is to put the weight of the overall contents of the capsule on the front of the label. For example, if the overall capsule contains 1000mg of fish oil, some suppliers declare the potency as 1000mg which make it sound as a high potency omega 3 supplemnt. However, 1000mg of fish oil is not necessaryily healthy as most of the contents will be irrelevant to your health needs and some of that oil may be contaminated.
One well known brand of Omega 3 fish oil was recently removed from the pharmacy shelves due to high levels of polution in the oil.
So how can you be sure that your Omega 3 fish oil is free from contaminants?
The first thing to look for is a supplement with E in front of the EPA. In other words E-EPA. The E stands for ‘Ethyl’ which is the name of the chemical group which is added to the EPA during the purification process. More details of this are given below.
So what you should be looking for is the level of EPA in the capsule. If the EPA content is more than 60% of the overall content then you know that it is high potency with little or no chance for contamination. An EPA level under 30% indicates that there will be a high level of impurities contained in the capsule.
E-EPA therefore is not to be confused with ordinary EPA.
The main difference therefore between E-EPA oil and normal EPA oils is that E-EPA has been thoroughly ‘cleaned’ of all pollutants and triglycerides. As a result it absorbs better and passes the blood-brain-barrier more efficiently. This is why E-EPA is favoured for psychiatric research, as the dosage is easy to handle and well accepted by patients.
The raw material for Dr Tolonen’s E-EPA is extracted from unpolluted wild fatty fish in the Pacific Ocean, specifically sardines and menhaden (which is similar to the herring family).
How does Dr Tolonen’s Purified Fish oil become purified?
Firstly the fish oil has to be distilled. The first process is Molecular Distillation which is a relatively easy technique and is therefore used by most Fish Oil suppliers. However, in order to become E-EPA (purified, pharmaceutical grade oil) the fish oil has to go through another procedure called high vacuum distillation. This is a far more sophisticated and expensive technique which removes unwanted contaminants, leaving high levels of EPA, the important active ingredient. Once this has been completed, and all contaminants removed, the oil is pale and the odour and taste is mild.

Pregnant or nursing?
Dr Tolonen’s purified E-EPA is ideal for people who want the benefits of fish oil without the disadvantages of pollution and contaminants. They are ideal for pregnant and nursing women who are advised to eat more fish oil for the benefit of the unborn child, but are concerned about the potential toxins.
